St. Humphrey
“Why, of all the gin joints in town, did you come into ours?”
In Casablanca, Humphrey Bogart was thinking about Ingrid Bergman, not the church. However, our priest often asks that question in a teasing way to new parishioners. You have lots of places where you could pop in on a Sunday morning. Why would you drop into St. John the Divine Episcopal Church in Morgan Hill?
Fr. Craig tells the story of how when he visited a number of churches when he was himself between church gigs that he discovered that it takes a lot of energy and courage to walk into a new church where you might not know anyone. So, despite the fact that you might be terrified to walk into a new church, you chose us: thank you, we are honored.
It also means that something is going on for you. Maybe you are new to the neighborhood. Perhaps you are feeling a spiritual itch that is drawing you to faith. Perhaps you just had one too many sermons about women not being able to lead and minister, or uncomfortable and unfriendly comments about LGBQT+ people, or feeling that the politics from the pulpit is not very Jesus-ish. Perhaps you are carrying a heavy burden, perhaps you long for the Eucharist after being denied it …
We get it.
And there is a good chance that you will find a few people here who have the same experience.
And so, to help you discern whether God might be drawing you to St. John’s, let me introduce you to you to another two saints: Saints Clive and Robin. …and a picture of St. Ingrid because, why not …
